Farm in New York Offers Farm-to-Table and Earth-to-Décor Shops
Saunderskill
Farms on Route 209 in Accord is run by the 12th generation of Schoonmakers who
have pride and passion for all they do for sustainable living and for the
community. Originally a wholesale business
selling to roadside markets in Bergen County, New Jersey, Cathy Schoonmaker
said, “We wanted to offer our produce and flowers to local residents. We built
the market and greenhouse for that purpose as well as providing a place where
our family members could work together.”
She said that each additional
service was inspired by the customers themselves. “We listen to what they want
and try to accommodate them as best we can.” The retail farm market and
greenhouses—which offer all floral, greenery, and yardery needs for in and
outside visual enhancements—was started in 1997. And, the most recent updates
have been an expansion for additional indoor seating with a warm and cozy gas
fireplace, public restrooms, and extra space for product presentation—which is
naturally colorful and visually beautiful. Not to mention their display of
mouth-watering baked goods! Plus—fun, family events throughout the year—such as
the Fall Harvest, Crafts Fair and Antique Tractor Pull.
Speaking for all the Schoonmakers
who have a role in the farm and retail shops, Cathy said, “We enjoy what we do
and we like to share it with everybody. With the support of our community and
customers, we have been able to continue and sustain our business as well as keep
agriculture alive in our community.”
