Hudson Valley House of Hope Silent Auction. Community Friends' committee volunteers are planning their annual silent auction to benefit Hudson Valley House of Hope, a local shelter for women, children, and men who have experienced domestic violence. Over 65 gift baskets of different themed merchandise and other valuable gifts will be available for bidding. Live musical entertainment will be provided by local professional band mondoRAJ. Container Gardening Basics. Join Poughkeepsie Farm Project educators to learn how to grow food in tiny spaces like flowerpots on a patio or balcony. They will also provide information about the local community garden plots that are available at a very low cost. Participants will go home with a pot, soil, and something to plant. Run Local First Team Training Program. The Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Health and Wellness Club invites participants to join this fitness program, which is designed to help individuals of any age or ability to begin running or return to running. Active sessions will include a guided warm-up, timed walk-run intervals, and guided cool-down. Runners will work in small groups and have the support of a dedicated volunteer Team Captain. Over the course of 8 weeks, participants will meet on Tuesdays to prepare to run for 20 minutes without stopping at their own pace. The program is limited to 80 participants; pre-registration required. $35 for members of the Chamber; $50 for non-members. All participants must sign a waiver of liability form. Oakwood Friends School Celebrates Earth Week with Help of Lakota Activist and Broadcaster. Just in time for Earth Week, Oakwood Friends is going greener with a new, 2.2-acre large solar array which will offset all its electricity, a new, 4-season greenhouse for growing food, and new composters to handle all organic waste. Like many indigenous cultures, the Lakota way is Earth centered. The School is thus being assisted in its celebration by one of its two Lakota students and Tiokasin Ghosthorse, who will conduct a three-day residency, raising and painting an 18-foot tipi, hosting a campfire, presenting a public performance on the red cedar flute and culminating his visit with a camp out and traditional sunrise greeting. 45th Annual Wappinger Creek Water Derby. Eight-mile canoe/kayak race down the Wappingers Creek from Pleasant Valley to Greenvale Park in Poughkeepsie. Many different classes. Trophies awarded. Photowork 2016. The 29th iteration of this annual national juried photography exhibition, Photowork is a premier regional exhibition of new photographic images. As a national show, this exhibition brings together photographers from across the country with artists from 30 to 40 states represented each year. The spirit of the show is a juxtaposition of traditional styles and cutting edge images, celebrating the photograph both as fine art and as social commentary. Winners in the past have included traditional 35mm photographs, silver gelatin prints, digital prints, and even pinhole camera pictures. Free. Barrett Art Center, 55 Noxon Street, Poughkeepsie.
