3rd Annual Beefsteak at the CIA. The Beefsteak is an event that originated in New York City in the mid-1800s, typically hosted by organizations wishing to raise money. Originally, Beefsteaks were men-only, all-you-can-eat (and drink) events, with diners sitting on crates and eating with their fingers—no utensils were provided. Beef, beer, and brass bands were the focus and gluttony was the order of the day. This 3rd Annual Beefsteak, in the glorious Farquharson Hall, welcomes both men and women to celebrate the pleasure and camaraderie of the communal table. Modfest. Modfest, now in its 14th year, is Vassar College’s celebration of 20th- and 21st-century arts with a series of programs and performances in dance, drama, visual art, film, literature, poetry, and music. Participants in Modfest 2016 include guest artists, Vassar students, faculty, and alumni, as well as students from Poughkeepsie area schools. Aqua Essence: Watercolors by Betsy Jacaruso. Through the aqueous process of watercolor, these paintings capture the atmosphere and luminosity of the Hudson Valley. Jacaruso has always been transfixed by the natural beauty of the mountains and river that comprise the Hudson Valley, where she was raised. In her luminous landscape series, she strives to go beyond creating a composition, capturing the essence and feeling of the Valley. “I endeavor to create a transcendental atmosphere, in hopes of evoking an emotion, which supersedes the visual,” says Jacaruso. Fishkill Model Train & Railroad Hobby Show. This show will feature the best in model train displays, memorabilia and related hobby items for fun and for sale. Admire the many operating train layouts, then browse extensive dealer and vendor tables. Don’t miss the LEGO city exhibits and bring the kids to see the Thomas the Tank Engine recreations. Kids will enjoy their own dedicated fun corner, and everyone has a chance to win raffle prizes of railroad toys and accessories. Admission is $7 for adults, $2 for kids under 12. Swing Dance to Live Music. Join the folks of Hudson Valley Community Dances for an evening of swing dancing to live music. Presentation on African American History and Quilting. Quilter Kyra Hicks will give a talk titled “Amazing African American Quilt History as Prelude,” presenting the links between African American history and quilting. A self-taught skilled crafter who uses cotton to explore political, religious, familial and romantic themes, Hicks’s original story quilts are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Arts & Design in New York City and the Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, NY. Hicks is also the author of Black Threads: An African American Quilting Sourcebook, the first comprehensive guide to African American quilt history and contemporary practice. Free admission. American Stories 1800-1950. A new exhibition showcases the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center’s extensive but not often exhibited collection of American paintings. American Stories 1800-1950 is a sweeping exploration of portraits, landscapes, and narrative paintings. American Stories was curated by James Mundy, the Anne Hendricks Bass Director of the Art Center. The show includes works by Milton Bellin, John Singleton Copley, Minna Citron, Andrew Michael Dasburg, and Charles Loring Elliott. fllac.vassar.edu.
